While you should always be on the lookout for quality inbound links, it’s even more important right in the beginning.  The sooner you can show the search engines that you’re trustworthy, the sooner you will start to move up in the rankings.

Quality link building is supposed to be natural.  It takes time to build links, so if your new website suddenly has hundreds of links, it’s going to look fishy to the search engines.  After all, it’s unnatural to get that many links at once.

The older your domain is, the higher you tend to rank with the search engines.  That’s why many weblog owners put up a holding page as soon as their domain is registered.  Something as simple as your logo and the words “Coming Soon” is enough to get your domain aging while you build the main website.  That way, when the final product does get published, you will already have a few weeks or months of age under your belt.

As soon as you’re ready to start building links, take a look at your top competitors, and see what kind of links they have.  If you can get links from the same places – like signing up for the same directory or doing a guest post for the same blog – you are one step closer to catching them.
