Education have been the conventional sectors where open source has seen strong adoption. I remember I have attended several seminars and workshops about Open Source Systems and Linux Systems during college hoping to learn something about it and yes I did learn many things. It was my startup in liking open source systems and open source programming. I get to know on Linux Open Source then.
There was one time when software licensing of our school was checked and the authorities found out that our school used unlicensed software. Our school then implemented a change of OS platforms to all school computers to prevent further authoritarian cases. Abruptly we got to use Linux Systems. At first we found it hard to adopt since we were Windows students. It was a month of familiarization. Indeed it was best for we experienced using such awesome and reliable system.
Open Source Technologies Updates
Open source technologies like Linux have started fast recognition and thrust with a host of technologies linked with FOSS having reached levels of development that are comparable with the best the proprietary software world has to offer. An apparent lower cost of ownership has been pushing enterprises and SMBs to switch to open source-based solutions.
According to Springboard Research, Linux on the server platform has grown its way to a prominent position in the Indian server OS market with its adoption rate increasing from 7 percent to 8.1 percent (and rising) over a 13-month period since April 2009.
Analyst firm Brown & Mohan says that the Linux subscription business has grown from around $6 million in 2006 to $26 million in 2010.
“The survey pointed out that the penetration of Linux and FOSS technologies is deeper than what we thought it was. The fact that many large users are keen to explore open source alternatives is pleasing. However, apart from some of the large enterprise systems integrators (SIs) such as Wipro and niche players such as MAAS in Kolkata or OS3 Infotech in Mumbai, the majority of mid-market resellers have not quite tapped the potential,” says Sandeep Menon, Country Head, Novell India. Open Source Technologies Defined
Open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials. Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. Before the term open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; open source gained hold with the rise of the Internet, and the attendant need for massive retooling of the computing source code.
Opening the source code enabled a self-enhancing diversity of production models, communication paths, and interactive communities. Subsequently, a new, three-word phrase "open source software" was born to describe the environment that the new copyright, licensing, domain, and consumer issues created. More in Wikipedia.
